Earthquake Safety Tips
Earthquakes can occur without warning, but being prepared can significantly reduce the risk of injury and damage. Here are essential safety tips for before, during, and after an earthquake.
Before an Earthquake
- Create an Emergency Plan
Discuss with family members where to meet if separated, and how to contact each other.
- Prepare an Emergency Kit
Include water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, flashlight, batteries, and important documents.
- Secure Your Home
Fasten heavy furniture to walls, secure water heaters, and store breakable items in low, closed cabinets.
During an Earthquake
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On
Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck, and hold on to sturdy furniture.
- If Indoors
Stay inside. Move away from windows, glass, and heavy objects. Stay in bed if you're there.
- If in a Vehicle
Pull over to a clear location, stop, and stay inside with your seatbelt fastened.
- If Outdoors
Move to an open area away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.
After an Earthquake
- Check for Injuries
Attend to your own injuries first, then help others if you can.
- Check for Hazards
Look for gas leaks, electrical system damage, and structural damage. If you smell gas, leave immediately.
- Be Prepared for Aftershocks
Aftershocks can occur minutes, days, or even months after the main earthquake.
